An Excuse For Drinking

By George Freek

Clouds black as ink
invade the sky
like a plague of locusts.
I can barely see the lake.
As a bitter wind tears
leaves from the trees,
a tiny fish beats
against the rocks,
very cold and very dead,
like an unfortunate mariner
buried at sea.
Is this all that our life
was meant to be?
I know it’s only a fish,
but still it’s hard
not to feel empathy.

George Freek's poem "Enigmatic Variations" was recently nominated for Best of the Net. His poem "Night Thoughts" was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
