“I met Deni Dietz at Killer Nashville in 2010, and though I wasn’t pitching a mystery at the time, I was writing one. Deni and I instantly “clicked”, and I knew that if I had a shot at getting a physical book published, she was it. Over the course of the next year, I finished The Marriage at the Rue Morgue, and I pitched it to Deni at Killer Nashville 2011. Deni said she loved the idea and she wanted to see the book.
And then I didn’t send it. Killer Nashville 2012 arrived, I pitched the book again. Deni looked at me across the table and said, “I’ve been waiting a year for you to send me that book!” It still took me until January of 2013 to hit “submit”, and when I did, Five Star accepted the manuscript.
To me, writing success means recognition by a traditional press in the form of a contract to publish a physical book with real pages and an authentic cover. Killer Nashville, Five Star Publishing, and Deni Dietz made all of those things possible for me. The Marriage at the Rue Morgue comes out in July of 2014, and I promise, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys.”
